Toronto emcee and Duckdown affiliate, Raz Fresco, has released his newest project, The Screwface Tape, which contains 15-tracks, giving new listeners just enough material to get a good feel for what the 19 year-old is doing. The mixtape’s title makes reference to a term coined by veteran Toronto rapper, Theo3, who used it to describe the city’s judgemental and dismissive attitude towards its own hip hop community. Regardless, The Screwface Tape features a nice blend of beats and borrows instrumentals from a few hip hop classics in tracks like Murderous and Puffin Lz (I’ll leave it up to you to connect the dots). Lyrically, Fresco shines in Cursed Blessings, where he demonstrates his noteworthy wordplay abilities. All in all, this mixtape isn’t the most cohesive but one can definitely hear the 90’s east-coast influence that is becoming a lot more prominent in up-and-coming hip hop artists… About time!
